Stucco, EIFS & Painting in Wheaton & Glen Ellyn, IL

Wheaton and Glen Ellyn have a large stock of 1920s and 1930s Tudor Revival and Colonial houses, and Tudor means stucco — usually stucco panels framed by half-timber boards, which is one of the more demanding exteriors to keep sound in this climate.

Working in Wheaton

The problem with that detail is the junction. Stucco and wood move at different rates and in different directions, so every board edge is a joint that opens slowly over decades. Water gets into the end grain, the board swells, the stucco panel cracks at the edge, and the whole thing accelerates. Repairing it properly means dealing with the timber and the sealant as part of the stucco scope rather than treating them as a carpenter's problem.

There is newer work here too — custom builds and large additions on the established streets around Wheaton College and Lake Ellyn, where the spec is usually a modern smooth stucco field with stone. We do both, and we would rather tell you which one your house needs than sell you the one we prefer.

Wheaton specifics

What we tend to find on Wheaton houses

Every town in Chicagoland has its own housing stock and its own weather exposure. These are the things that come up here.

  • Half-timber junctions

Every stucco-to-timber edge on a Tudor is a moving joint. Sealing and detailing those is most of what keeps the panels sound, and it is the part that usually gets skipped.

  • Panel-by-panel repair

Tudor stucco comes in framed panels, which is good news for repair — a failed panel can be taken back to its own borders and rebuilt without touching the rest of the elevation.

  • Color on a historic elevation

Tudor stucco was rarely bright white. Getting the tone right against dark timber matters more than people expect, and it is worth sampling on the wall before committing a whole house to it.
